Exeter Library - Exeter, New Hampshire
Louis Kahn was commissioned to design the Exeter Academy Library in 1965. Construction began in April 1969 and was completed in November 1971. He was allowed to design the library in such a way that it would become the new central feature for the academy, but because of the route he took in designing it, it stands out distinctly from the other buildings. While all buildings on the grounds have a distinct red brick exterior, this is all Kahn's design shares with the rest of the campus. It is 9 stories tall, with 4 stories being below ground. The other buildings in the area are at most 3 stories tall. True to form, the interior is composed of x-beams and supports and columns of poured concrete. The building is nearly cubic in shape as can be seen by the photos. The building itself has won the Twenty-Five Year award from the American Institute of Architects.
